US/Canada TOURREPORT

The 2003 Metal Gods Tour

April 25th - Chicago - House of Blues

Our setlength was only 30min. today, because the curfew was very early. We started straight without an introduction with "Angel in Black" and we fought all little sound and stageproblems through to the final song "Final Embrace". The around 1500 fans liked us and gave us a great response. Then a "Hello" to our crew for the tour incl. so called "tourmanager" Jason, backliners Willie & Steve and our US John Schultz, who showed up to help us. A little Testament and a little Halford and then straight into our beds of course after introducing us to our labelmates from Immortal - we share the bus & crew together during the tour.

April 26th - Cleveland - Agora Theatre
The world looks different after a night of sleep and the weather was a lot of better than the day before in Chicago - around 20 degrees. The venue looked like the place they filmed the Spinal Tap movie, but a positive huge stage. Again around 1500 people showed up and after Metal Mike's "Painmuseum", "Carnal Forge" and "Behemouth", we started at 8.10pm. Today with introduction, gear problems at Tom's side was repared short before the set - Stefan's gear working smooth - we really had a great time on stage and sensational loud response from the crowd. We rocked through "Angel in Black", "Battalions of Hate", "Nuclear Fire", "Chainbreaker", "Fear", "Eye of an Eagle", "Silver & Gold" and "Final Embrace" - cool show, great performance by Randy Black and of course all the other guys. Ralf voice was in a great shape and we were really happy about our show. "Immortal" had great show too and it was Testament's last show before 3 show break for them. Reason for a nice backstage party after their set. "Halford" play a very interesting set, with a lot of interesting songs. Later!

April 28th - Travel Day / Canada
Not a lot of sleep on our trip to Canada. Some people remind the border controls like the ones in former Eastern Germany - never expected this, but they have their reason. The entire tourparty got a great deal at the Best Western Hotel and we joined. Great Thai foot and a nice trip through the city. Everybody's talking about SARS here, we saw nothing about this in the city, except on the TV - later we watched a movie recommended by Achim, "Spider" by David Cronenberg, which turned out a nightmare - wrong movie on a cool day! Sleep!

April 29th - Toronto - Opera House
Our first show in Canada, we're really looked forward for this moment and our current drummer is Canadian too. First we listened to a story, that the Opear House were closed for along time, cause in the dressing rooms were 25 children killed in the 20ies - aha ...... Amon Amarth ariived and played their first show today. We hear a lot of "Primal Fear" chants before the show and they really liked the show. Great response by the fans and my compliment to the band for the playing. Some questions about the stage sound as always, cause Ralf's vocals were nowhere to find, but anyway - we rocked the place!

May 1st - Hartford, CT - Webster Theater
we arrived in Hartford at 10 am - nice venue, strange place. We heared stories, that the show was very short announced and tzhe local promoter hasn't enough time to promote the show well. Pain Museum starts and not a lot of people are in the venue. Carnal Forge's faces are not better - they are fighting more with a feedback mayhem, than their songs - as we started to play the place is a little better filled, but far away from "sold out". The show worked out well, the only mess is the reaction as we announced drummer Randy before "Final Embrace" - maybe we don't have to tell some Americans, that Randy is a Canadian - holy sh***! Rob Halford is using the next room to ours and we have a nice chat with him, earlier with Roy Z. After the show, there were rumours, that PF, Immortal and Testament should cut some of our fee to help the tour nopt being cancelled. That was a huge disappointment for the Immortal & PF camp. What was going onbehind the scene? One good thing aside of this. We never ever thought, that only after one week of playing and travelling together, Immortal & PF become friends.

  May 2nd - New York City - B.B. Kings
Nice club in the middle of Manhatten, close to the time square, but the continuing rumours about the cancellation of Testament, Immortal and maybe PF 'cause we're recieving fees, are going on. The spirit of the musicians are of course not the funniest. We checked in the Days Inn Hotel and walked to the place. The venue is well packed, as Mike and his new band Painmuseum started the show. Testament will be back to festivals running order today. We entered the stage at 8.30 and the place rocked. Great response by the NY metalheads and after all the trouble behind the stage, we let the metal flow on stage. With a mean attitude, we kicked ass and the audience gives back. We added a little drumsolo by Randy to the set and ended the show, with a heavy version of "Final Embrace". Thanks NY - a lot of familiar faces are in the club like Billy Milano, Bob Marlette, Alex Scolnik, Charlie Benante and a lot of more guys. Some beers with the Immortal & Testament guys and the rumour section is unstoppable. First suggestions, that the entire tour is cancelled are noticed in the backstage area.

May 3rd - New York City - B.B. Kings Yes it's true - we hear it from John Baxter in person, that the Metal Gods Tour is cancelled and this will be the final show. Bang! The B.B. Kings is even more packed than yesterday. We're really feel like beeing a part of a well known movie........ Immortal have to fly from NY to Phoenix to come back via Germany to Norway - that sounds like Australia is closer ...... anyway, outside was a fantastic crowd waiting and we shaked our hands for the last time. During our introduction, we heared an extreme loud audience and it exploded with our first songs "Angel in Black" & "Batalions of Hate". Next "Nuclear Fire" and we see the first big moshpit in years :-) - "Chainbreaker" recieved a massive response by the fans, then "Fear", "Eye of an Eagle", "Silver & Gold" and "Final Embrace" - maybe the circumstances, maybe the response of the fans - but this was the most intense show of the Metal Commando since a long, long time. Huge "Primal Fear" chants as we said "Goodbye & Thanks" to the fans and left the stage. The mood backstage was so depressed, that not even Metal Mike came on stage as planned to jam the song "Fear" with us. Time to say goodbye to our new friends of Cranal Forge, Amon Amarth & Immortal, salute to the guys of Testament and Halford & of course our fantastic crewguys Steve and Magic Willie ...... some shirts, some more drinks - bye!

Final Thoughts
We checked all possibilities to fly home from NY to Germany instead of Dallas, but the people at DELTA airlines gave us no helping hand. With just arrogant excuses, they let us alone in big NY or charge each of us another $ 2.000,-- to fly home, even if we've got the flights from Dallas to Germany - another nice experience and we have to stay another 3 days in "cheap" NYC, as our travel agency Monidial (thanks for your help!) found some new payable flights for us on Tuesday from NY to Stuttgart. We had some nice days in NY and we made the best out of our stranded situation.

Official statement by Primal Fear regarding 'The 2003 Metal Gods Tour'
We spend a lot of money to be a part of this tour and we lost not only the money - we lost our faith in doing business with the US people under these circumstances.
We had some meetings during the days after the final show in NY and first of all, we don't want to blame anybody now of the two remaining parties - the booking agency Universal Attractions Inc and Metal Gods Tours Inc (Halford's mgmt Emas)!

The research will continue in the next days, but it will not change the fact that the tour is over. We're tired of all the excuses and even more excuses. We just listened to reports, that if the Halford camp would have cancelled just one of their own 3 nightliners, the tour will be safe. The next two dates in Worcester and Montreal were close to be sold out. Others say, that the booking agent confirmed the tourdates too late for an accordingly promotion. "Contractual difficulties" was the official reason regarding Halford's management. Just one thing, we have our European dates at least 4 months before the first show sigened & sealed incl the contracts. After the mess, more and more people start to gossip about reasons and their view - for the PF camp, gossip doesn't help in this situation. We just want to tell, that we're unbelieveable disappointed and sad. During the 2 weeks, we had a great time and saw that Rob Halford is still the man with the voice of metal and he proofs it, his band incl. Bobby, Mike, Roy & Mike kicked ass - Testment killed, Chuck is one of the friendliest persons we've ever met. Immortal are on top of their genre and they are cool guys. If there would be a chance in the future for another collaboration, we would join them! In the end, we lost a lot of money and even if Nuclear Blast Records help us out in this situation, we have a very rough financial time before us. Thanks to the metalheads in the US & Canada for some great shows!

The Metal Gods 2003 North American Tour - House Of Blues, Chicago, IL - April 25, 2003

Primal Fear starts at 5:30 p.m. I looked at my friend Mark and said, "I have waited five years to see Primal Fear...I am not about to miss them now." We decided to go upstairs and see if the bands are on schedule...they were, in fact all of the bands were on a very tight schedule because of the all-ages curfew. The first five bands all used Pain Museum, Carnal Forge and Behemoth had already played and by this time it was 5:15 p.m. and Primal Fear was slated to come on in fifteen minutes, so we decided to forego the meet and great session in favor of seeing Primal Fear. Looking around the House Of Blues, I was happy to see how many young kids were in attendance. A new generation of metal heads! The place was near capacity ... even three hours before Halford was to set foot on stage. Five-thirty sharp, Primal Fear hit the stage.

Primal Fear (30 minutes) Angel In Black / Battalions Of Hate / Chainbreaker / Fear / Eye Of An Eagle / Silver & Gold / Final Embrace

Primal Fear came out with all guns blazing, ripping out the first songon NUCLEAR FIRE, "Angel In Black." Mat Sinner, Tom Naumann, and Stefan Leibing all had their camouflage pants on and black shirts and Ralf Scheepers was dressed all in black. When Scheepers first walked on stage I thought, "Holy S#@T, he is one big guy...and I am not talking overweight...he is built like a professional wrestler, and with the shaved head, he is one intimidating looking man. The twin guitar attack of Naumann and Leibing was just plain awesome. I haven't seen a guitar duo like this in a loooooong time. Because Tom is left-handed, when the two come together they form a very cool Metal V that looks great on stage. The mix was a little weak at first but was resolved by the second song, the very heavy "Battalions Of Hate" from their debut. Scheepers was very impressive hitting all of the high notes as on the recordings and Mat Sinner (who sings for Sinner) provided very complementary harmonies and background vocals. Randy Black (Annihilator) proved to be a flawless substitute for Klaus Sperling on drums (who could not make the North American tour). Ralf paused briefly after "Battalions Of Hate" and said they only had a short time to play but promised to hit each of their four releases, which they did. I was a little surprised that three of the seven songs came from their debut and that only "Fear" was played from BLACK SUN, their latest release.

Tom Naumann is a killer guitarist... There were times I thought he was going to bend the guitar strings right off the neck. Stefan Leibing just plain shreds and was playing with reckless abandon. Their two styles complemented each other very well. When Ralf introduced the first song they ever wrote together, "Chainbreaker," the crowd went nuts! I occasionally glanced around to access the response that Primal Fear was getting and I can confidently say there were some Primal Fear fans in attendance, with fists in the air; the Metal Commando was well represented. Ralf Scheepers has a very dominating presence on stage. Along with his large physique, the intensity in which he delivered his performance was very Halford-like. There are definitely some similarities, from the way he works the microphone to the way he moves on stage. It is obvious that Rob Halford has been an influence on Mr. Scheepers, but hey...if you're going to be influenced by someone, it might as well be the Metal God himself! Mat Sinner was relentlessly pounding on his bass, all the while nailing the harmony vocals. It was good to see the smiles on their faces as they performed. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves very much and were running around stage. "Eye Of An Eagle" was very cool live. "Silver & Gold" probably got the biggest response out of the crowd along with "Chainbreaker." In the beginning of "Fear"they played a quick piece of "Countdown To Insanity" which opens up the BLACK SUN CD. They ended with "Final Embrace" from JAWS OF DEATH, with a brief extended jam at the end. Their 30-minute set took a lot of energy out of me as I was really into it with fist in air the entire time. This band is everything Metal should be: heavy rhythms, pounding drums and ripping vocals. They were everything I thought they would be live and did not disappoint. My only negative is that they didn't get to play longer. I cannot wait to see these guys again. If you even remotely like Primal Fear, don't hesitate to see them on this tour. The I spent for a ticket was worth it just to see them!
